Proposal: Increase of 'max_validators' cap

I support an increase to 75 validator set. Will vote and help push out the proposal

yes, expanding to 75 validators is more than enough at the moment
I fully support the idea

We support, can improve network security.

Thank You, learn a lot from the process and Bwlnet will support too
We do love Akash and very happy with the great community :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I believe increasing the max validators is a good move. Allowing for more participants to take part in the network, further diversifies and secures it.

Support. We #decentralizehk have been a invalid validator for a while. The entry barrier is kind of high.

Pro:
Several community members and partners have been contacting me about becoming validators. Rather than “removing” validators for new validators, it would be better to simply support adding more validators over time.

Con:
The more validators on the network, the longer consensus will take. Blockchains with too many validators are slower.

I think 75 is better number. It will help network to be more decentralized. By this proposal we have increased set of 75, and broadcast time of network increased slightly I think. As part of #PrithviDevs we support this proposal.

We are in support of an increase in the number of validators in the"Active" set.

We’re in line with the vote of others that we believe an increase to 75 initially, with incremental steps to 98 then 125 would be long-term goals as the network matures.

This will help to decentralize the network, however, are there any plans to further decentralize the distribution of voting power? At the moment the top 10 control almost 50% of the voting power.

Simply Staking agrees with the increase in the validator set size from 64 to 75. As has already been mentioned, this will allow new members to join the set instead of them replacing others, all while not being too large of an increment, promoting smoother growth and expansion of the set rather than a sudden leap to 100.

+1! Starting with 75, and adding more over time is sensible.

+1 In order to be more centralized, I think this is very positive advice

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments so far.

Based on the discussions above and in the discord, I think consensus has formed towards an increase to a new cap of 75. We look forward to proposing it on chain soon with a good timing that doesn’t clash with the efforts going on with the Osmosis launch.

The plan is to keep the proposal wording super simple, concise and clear as follows:

Proposal 7: “Increase max_validator cap to 75.”

In the Akash Network the total number of validators is currently capped at 64. This number was chosen in the whitepaper “AKT: Akash Network Token & Mining Economics” and used for the network launch as a suitable balance between decentralisation and validator quality.

Due to the impressive stability exhibited by the network since launch and through the upgrade to akashnet-2, and as a result of the quantity of experienced validators who have signalled their intention to join the active set, we believe it is time to increase the validator cap to 75.

75 has been chosen and supported through community engagement including in the forum at the following link Proposal: Increase of 'max_validators' cap as a number that again balances decentralisation with validator quality.

If successful, this proposal will result in the automatic update of the max_validators parameter in the staking module to 75 and the instant promotion of the next 11 validators by voting power into the active set. No network halt and upgrade will be required.

Future increases to the validator set will be handled again by on-chain proposal once the time is deemed right.

Please let me know any comments in the coming days. We will announce the submission time of the proposal soon once we have it finalised.

I’m in strong support of this increase in max_validators cap.

I also think a slow increase with an active foundation in getting newer validators actively contributing to the network is an effective way to increase the validator set size.

The alternative take is just allow as many validators to instantly join as technically feasible, but then you run into risks with power laws in stake making them ineffective for network security and with validators having no effective on-ramp for contributing more actively / accruing more delegation

Let me know once you post the Prop. Don’t see a reason to wait for Osmosis.

This is great, thank @KamuelBob for your time, effort and community-led discussion, and taking into consideration the community’s feedback

We’re excited for this proposal and will amplify it across our community for visibility once live

And it’s live.

Thanks everyone for the input and here’s to a growing ecosystem! We look forward to seeing the outcome.

PSA: Less than 10 minutes until the proposal passes.

If you’re in the top 11 validators by stake in the inactive set, then make sure your validator is online and synchronised to start signing blocks immediately.

Good luck everyone!
